Gear List

OK.  There was one lesson I didn't learn from last year and that was the amount of gear that I hauled.  Too much again.  One piece of gear that made packing frustrating was the bear canister.  Dave and I were the only ones hauling them.  Although several parks are now requiring hikers to use bear canisters, Glacier has not imposed that rule and has maintained hanging poles at every campsite.  Next year's goal is to get all gear down to about 30 lbs.  This can be a tough challenge, but I will enjoy my hiking more.

Best gear:  Leki Makalu anti-shock hiking poles.  They really helped on the ascents/descents; not nearly as much strain on the knees.  I would also have to say the Marmot Precip Rain Jacket was next.  The Precip is light and an all round good performer from rain, wind, and pesky mosquitoes.  As a final note; cloth tape for blister prevention - don't leave home with out it.

Worst gear:  I would say the bear canister.  We really didn't need it.  Although it only weighs 2.5 pounds, it was bulky and took up a lot of space in the pack.  I could have hung it on the outside, but to me, that defeats the purpose of having an internal frame pack.  May make a good flower pot.

I developed a database to plan my trips and gear usage, so as far as tracking everything that should be easy. Below is an output of everything I hauled.  As a breakdown, I had 14 pounds of food (just a hair above the rule of thumb of 2 lbs/day),  3 liters of water per day/start (about 7 pounds), and another pound for white gas.  Ironically I was still under the 30% rule.  The only day the weight was overbearing was on the first.  Training helped a lot with handling the load, but from now on I am going to work on reducing the load and going as light as I can.  I will be posting a comparative list of lighter gear versus what I hauled on this trip.

Note: Several months later I did a scrupulous measurement of all the gear I carried in Glacier and it was actually 68.2 pounds.
