This was a beginners backpack to
Catalina. This was a great weekend with a trip
sponsored through the Outdoors Club. It consisted of
taking the boat out of San Pedro to Two Harbor then
backpacking over to Little Harbors Campsite for two
nights.
The island just went through a
fire that came very near to burning all of Avalon.
The place was bone dry.
The boat trip out of San Pedro is relatively quick -
it is about a 70 minute ride over. Once in Two
Harbors, it is definitely a fell of a little resort
town. There is not much there other than a local pub
and restaurant, the General Store, and an activities
rental store near the dock. The visitors center is
right when you get off the boat at the end of the
dock. This is also here where you would pick up your
camping permit. The other buildings in this area are
maintenance facilities and lodge for both the local
residents and workers for the conservancy.
The group was coming on all different boats and
times. As typical with a lot of club trips,
there were numerous cancellations. It was an
easy hike and Marie and I may short time of the
distance Mark and JoAnne and the boys joined us the
next day.
Once we got to Little harbors, our campsite was
Number 10 which is right near the water. The
camp ranger was a likeable fellow named Doc and him
and his wife actually sailed in and had their boat
tied up in the cove.
The next day was some day hiking
down the coast and back. The others hadn't
shown up yet so Marie and I took off down the roads.
We actually did a little bush whacking across one
field. It was burnt to a crisp. The
drought really had hit the island and you can see
how the fire must have taken off toward Avalon.
When we got back the other were in camp and were
hanging on the beach.
The next morning I did an early
solo hike back and nailed the 7 miles in less than 2
hrs. I just made it down for the omelet brunch
at the restaurant. The other came in later and
we sat at the bar and drank until our boat arrived.
The sites are pretty nice. They
have a faucet with potable water, fire ring, fire
bucket and barrel of water, and a canopy over two
tables. Also at certain locations are shower units
and toilets - ours did have it's own portable
toilet.
